 Position Overview

Near Earth is looking for a Mechanical Engineer who will design, analyze, test, and contribute to the production of prototype and released systems for autonomous aviation. As a member of the hardware group, the ideal candidate will take on progressively more independent tasks with project teams, including defining requirements, designing, building, documenting, and debugging tasks, as well as interfacing with the production department for assembly and integration work. These efforts are to support and lead the development of systems that range from breadboards, to proof-of-concept systems, to pre-production prototypes, to production released systems.

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about electromechanical system trends and state-of-the-art technology, and are also self-starting, empathetic team players, and strong communicators. The ideal candidate for this position can multitask effectively, is comfortable working on a quick development tempo, enjoys the challenge of changing requirements and priorities, and most importantly enjoys bringing new autonomy technology to life.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Has performed as the primary mechanical designer in a minimum of one product design/build/delivery cycle.

  • Design for manufacturability experience.
  • Experience working with rapid prototyping methods
  • Must have experience with the creation of detailed drawings.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • 1+ years of industry experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Systems development for aviation/aerospace/defense markets.
  • Experience with machining and manufacturing a plus
  • Experience with Configuration Management practices.
  • Understanding of Product Lifecycle Management practices.
  • Experience with system qualification, verification, and validation.
  • Design of optics and opto-mechanical design and simulation (windows, lenses, cameras).
  • Design of precision actuators/gimbals.
  • Design, analysis, characterization, and simulation of various physical phenomena such as mechanical stress/strain, thermal, vibration, and ingress.

Due to the nature of our federal contracts, this position is subject to successful completion of a background check.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
