Job Responsibilities and Duties
The Systems Engineer (SE) will contribute to the development of aviation autonomy systems. This role will support the software development and release process, focusing on requirements development and validation, design reviews, developmental testing, and software and system verification. The SE will be embedded in a cross-functional product team, working closely with software engineers, product managers, and test engineers. The SE will help to improve systems processes over time to enable rapid development of safe and effective flight software.
A summary of roles and responsibilities includes:
- Development:
- Requirements definition
- Tracing of requirements, software components, and test artifacts
- System and software architecture definition via diagrams and documentation
- Software interface control
- Design reviews
- Verification:
- Test planning and execution
- Software and system-level verification and validation
- Software unit test, integration testing, simulation, and flight testing
- Release management:
- Documentation
- Configuration management
- Issue tracking and resolution planning
This role includes travel approximately once per quarter for field testing.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or another relevant engineering field
- 5+ years of industry experience participating in at least one complete project cycle, including definition, development, deployment, and verification
- Direct experience with software requirements and verification.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to assess tasks and apply appropriate processes, tools, and levels of formality and to adapt to changes in course
- Ability to work independently and balance multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment
- This position will be based in Pittsburgh, PA, with time primarily in the office and a portion of time in the field
Desired Qualifications and Skills
- Experience in aviation or autonomous vehicles.
- Experience in defense markets.
- Experience in development of software products.
- Experience in documenting and modeling software systems via UML and other methods.
- Experience with safety critical software systems.
- Proficiency in a requirements tracking tool (e.g., DOORS, Jama, Visure).
- Due to the nature of Near Earth's funding, this position is restricted to US persons.
